More Weeknight Tinkering..

A simple challenge was set today, as the external bits of the damper that was stripped last weekend were looking great (cleaned and painted), fork oil had arrived, and was poised and ready, all that was required was to clean up the internals to be complete for re-filling and re-assembly.

All the bits and pieces... clean
On dis-assembly, i didn't really check the condition of the inner parts.just kind of pulled them out, drained, and wrapped up in a rag to prevent any more crap getting on them for a later time...

so, it was all going well. the main piston shaft was clean, and the variety of nuts, springs, washers, rubber and felt pieces were all inspected and cleaned. It appears this may have had a fairly recent service, as none of the rubber seals need replacing and were as new. Same for the small felt washer. great. Attention turned to the main tube. Something looked quite wrong. (this shock did make a bit strange noise when it was assembled on the frame and compressed before...)

Pretty sure its not meant to be like that..
So it appears the bottom part of the damper tube was a bit split. However this happend im not quite sure, but it did, and is. A light poking around with hands revealed the extend of the split...

it was literally held on by a hair thick strand of metal, and came off in my hands.

hmm, yes, this is not right.

Awesome. I guess its condition could be accurately described as fu***d.

So I'm going to once again ask the nice fellas on Russian Iron forum for some advice. Perhaps i can press the old part out and replace with a new, or would a complete new damper be required? I've never seen this part for sale from any of the dealers before, or even know what its called.

Only time will tell.

Lucky i decided to open the spring mechanism further, or i may have not found this until on a ride somewhere....

Ill try to open the damper top of the stuck shock next i think, as i now have a nice array of clean spare parts to use.
Well i guess it all cant go well, i think this is the first wall I've reached whist on this restoration journey. not bad, I'd say!...
