cylinder heads Part 2

I took some time this weekend to finish up on the cylinder heads. I worked on the right hand side, cleaned + painted. Then both went back on the bike, with the nice freshly painted exhaust system (had a bit of a gas leakage that took away some paint on the down pipes -  but that's all sorted now)

this also gave me the opportunity to replace the tappets on the right side, as they were a bit buggered. (id already done the ones on the left):

Somewhat worn tappet tops. The other end wasnt to bad, but was a good idea to replace the whole lot..

new tappets

old and new

cleaned + painted right cylinder head

this one had a chunk of a cooling fin missing, no idea how that happened, but its not a problem. Everything else is structurally good.

and the left on the bike

right one, on the bike - here i was setting the distances for tappets.
Setting tappets:

from what i  understand it goes like this; (only applies to side-valve engines)

ALL THESE SETTINGS ARE WITH A COLD ENGINE
  • Turn the kick start until the INTAKE valve is completely closed. A gap must be visible (or "feeler-ed") between the valve and the lifter. Set the gap on the EXHAUST valve to .10mm - .15mm.
  •  Turn the kick start until the exact moment the EXHAUST valve begins to lift. Set the gap on the INTAKE valve to .05mm - .10mm.
  •  Repeat on other side.
  •  Turn the kick start and recheck measurements.

once all these were set, i kicked it over to see if i had made any error in reassembling etc.
It started first go.
i'd say thats good.
