Finally got around to looking into the fuel tank cleaning. I had been putting it off as it involved some strong skin melting chemicals. But i got to it following this guide from real classic, which i i would absolutely recommend, as it gave spectacular results:
http://www.realclassic.co.uk/techfiles/petrol_tank_cleaning_and_rust_removal.html
I couldn't get a good pic of inside the tank, but heres the filler cap to show the results..

no rust here. look close you can see where it was. |
once the process as complete ( i did start a week ago, as part of the process involved a few days of sitting to let the chemicals do the work) i got to sanding the tank.
and then painted it, bunch of layers of primer /sanding, then top coat etc...
forgot the take a pic but i can assure you it looks good:
So now id need to look at wheels.
I set up a rudimentary wheel truing stand, and got to work, spending a few hours to tune the wheels to a serviceable straight. the plan is to get them as straight as i can before the (now) looming MOT date (yes i know things aren't even fully back together yet, but you need goals people) , enough to pass, then get them sent off to a professional to fine tune.
Then got to some arm work out with putting the tyres and innertubes back in..

Some wheels, done |
|
a wheel all shiny |
i guess they should really go back on the bike then.
aand then some further reassembly of the engine.
|
gearbox finally on |
|
bit of a bastard but it got on there in the end and works beautifully. |
|
Left piston head on |
|
and again |
only need the right cylinder head to go on now, but i'm waiting for a shipment of piston rings before i can continue,,
EDIT:
finally got the last bits of the engine together. all thats missing is some spark plugs..
