It Begins..

1 x workshop..
Some might call it 'cosy'. I didnt have the luxury of large building space, but this is more than enough to keep WIP parts. its got a roof, its warm, its got electricity, has a work bench, (ive also now installed a vice to the bench). What more do you need? (perhaps a proper floor, but that's on its way)

It was a rainy weekend so i thought id start off with a simple first task, the spare wheel. not many pics as i forgot to take some as i went along..
A real crap tire on this one, so i cut and pried it of the rim.
The rim was not so good underneath either. got a few rust holes in it. There's no way id trust my bike on that even if the holes were welded! Ive ordered a new one.
The spokes were rusted to the rim, so i cut them all of.

Nice and rusty spoke end...

The hub however was in a much better condition. Traditional level of 'quality' casting, a bit of a  polish and it looked pretty good! very little wear on the inside brake drum. So i don't think this spare was ever really used. it also had a stamp inside saying 1967. perhaps this bike didn't come with a spare, or the original was damaged at some point in its previous life..

Cleaned spare wheel hub with bearing set

Removed the bearings, which seemed to be covered in dried grease deposits probably dating back to 1965. Once removed, i found they were actually in excellent condition.!

I found the best way to get these bearing out was to get an axial, pop it in the hole from the 'drive/brake/ side, and lightly tap with a hammer. Out come your bearings for inspection. no fuss.

All in all:
New Spokes x 40

New Rim x 1
(got a genuine parts of an eBay seller at a reasonable price -  i know eBay can be an issue sometimes, as there are some questionable 'dealers' out there. but this guys products are genuine and of good quality!)

Ive already got a spare rubber tire and inner tube ready to go, just waiting for the rim and spoke set to appear.
