Some more work
old ruskie pistons.it been a year since the sucessfull "completion" of the build and pass on the MOT.
As a child that struggles to learn to walk, my Dnepr has struggled with getting going in a reliable way.
I had a few fun shorter trips during the summer, and a few recovery van of shame pickups. The most problematic would be a pickup form the middle of the M20.
It was quite a warm day, and i had just embarked on a journey to see some friends in the south of england (and show off the bike a little :) ). It was all going well, good start up, nice responsive throttle, happy misses in the sidecar. Everything seemed to be going well.
Close to the end of the journey, (ironically, just after my partner and i had had a convo over the intercom about how well everything was going) I was greeted with a loud pop, sudden loss of power, a fair bit of smoke and a soggly oil soaked left foot.
bugger.
On a closer inspection back at the workshop, it appears i have now joined the holey piston club. I think this was a result of a slightly lean mixture and a very hot day, continuious high speed riding + old ruskie pistons.
unfortunatlythis will probably cost £££££. :(
To keep everything even i replaced both sides with new properly made EU pistons, New cylinder heads - the cylinder on the popped side managed to get some motlen piston stuck onto it whichi managed to gouge a chunk out of the sidewall. I kept the old heads for a potential reboring project later on. I also got a new set of valves as i had the heads off.
i did some checks to make check if any debris made it inside the crank case, did a full oil flush and refil, and then fitted all the bits. After a bit of tinkering (and a new distributor rotor) it was going again but sounded quite rough. A bit of carb tweeking and a airleeak fix later, all is running (or rather idling) OK but not great. Excessive backfireing popping and a bit of investigation revealed a worn cam shaft and timing gears.
that is the next bit t replace.
yay.
well that about does it, all i need to replace now is the oil pump abnd the crankshaft and ive got a totally new new engine.
i get the feeling this bike is turning into a "triggers broom" scenario.
oh well i suppose when its all done i'll have a working "new" old bike.
pics to follow.
